There is a reason why everyone recommends cast iron cookware for emergency preparedness and self sufficiency? Because not only can you cook with cast iron over an open flame, it will also last for several generations if properly cared for. Using Aluminum and Teflon pots and pans over an open flame should be avoided, they were not meant to cook over high temperature heat sources like cast iron can. Another benefit of cast iron is its an excellent heat conductor, cast iron cookware heats evenly and when properly seasoned, a cast iron pan will be stick resistant and require no additional oil. There are a lot of different methods on the internet on how you should season your cast iron, I used coconut oil like in the video below. Let me know what worked best for you.
